Photojournalist Ashley Gilbertson's book of images from Iraq is aptly named "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" — military longhand for WTF. Polish soldiers suntan in their underwear on a base in Karbala; a grinning U.S. Marine slides down a marble bannister in Saddam's palace; a Sunni woman smiles after triumphing over Shiite militia members who had tried to evict her from her home, only to be murdered the following day while walking to her local bakery.
His ongoing project, "Bedrooms of the Fallen," shows the empty bedrooms of soldiers who died fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Gilbertson has been awarded the Robert Capa Gold Medal and a National Magazine Award, two of the highest honors in journalism. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker and Vanity Fair, among other publications, and is currently on display at the Brooklyn Museum's WAR/PHOTOGRAPHY exhibition. Gilbertson will be interviewed by VICE Editor-in-Chief Rocco Castoro.
Ticket includes admission and a free Brooklyn Brewery beer. All proceeds from the events in this series benefit RISC (Reporters Instructed in Saving Colleagues).
